Draft of New "Green Chemistry Plan" released for public comment

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has released the Draft Green Chemistry Support Program Action Plan (Draft Action Plan), prepared by the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production

It was sent to stakeholders, including MCC for review and comments.

The Draft Action Plan, developed with stakeholder input, will be used by the Department of Environmental Quality as a guide to implement Governor Jennifer M. Granholm's Executive Directive No. 2006-06, "Promotion of Green Chemistry for Sustainable Economic Development and Protection of Public Health."

According to the e-mail sent by Robert Jackson of the Environmental Science and Services Division Department of Environmental Quality;  The plan lays out three phases of development of an implementation strategy over the next five years to build awareness for green chemistry and engineering within the state, set the foundation for the Green Chemistry Support Program, and establish Michigan as a leader in Green Chemistry.

The critical elements of the plan are as follows:

1. Define the parameters of the Green Chemistry Support Program.

2. Build a resource database of Green Chemistry activities in Michigan.

3. Create a Green Chemistry "brand."

4. Hold a Green Chemistry Research and Education Conference in 2009.

5. Develop an annual Green Chemistry Awards Program.

6. Set the groundwork for long-term Green Chemistry efforts that will benefit the economy, environment, and health.

7. Establish opportunities for sustainable adoption of Green Chemistry within education.

Jackson has asked for comments on the proposed plan by April 25, via fax or email.  The final Action Plan to be presented to the newly established Green Chemistry Roundtable in May.  A copy of the draft plan is available on the MCC website CLICK HERE
