MCC Encourages Yes on Proposal 1 to Support Transparency and Term Limits Reforms

The MCC recently announced its support for Proposal 1 on the 2022 ballot, which would enact financial disclosure and legislative term limits reform.

Because Michigan is one of only two states without any requirements for financial disclosure by public officials, the proposal would require basic financial disclosures and allow for more scrutiny of potential conflicts of interest.

The proposal would also reform Michigan’s legislative term limits, which have been nation's strictest since 1992, allowing legislators – on a lifetime basis – to serve only six years in the House and eight years in the Senate. The proposal would reduce the limits to 12 years served, but allow legislators to more flexibly serve that in either the House, Senate, or any combination. This would allow for greater stability and experience in legislative leadership, leading to better policymaking and more effective oversight of administrative agencies.

The MCC’s policy committee believes that this proposal – if enacted – would lead to more informed policymaking based on science and actual evidence rather than politics.

The 2022 election will take place on Tuesday, November 8th, and absentee ballots are available to voters upon request beginning in a few weeks.
